Blog, what blog?

Do I have a blog? I know it doesn't seem like it. But it's a crazy busy time right now. Less than one week until the Federal Election. I am afraid it's starting to look like we will have a conservative majority and that worries me far more than the economy ever could.

I am also preparing to take a trip to London. I am beside myself with excitement and can really think of little else. It's like I'm 12 years old again getting ready to take my first trip to Disneyland.
I will post some pictures when I get back and maybe have a few stories to tell and all.

Ah... Old Smokie... Happy days.

Will this be your first trip to London?

My first tip then would be planning... then, go and see everything that is free first.

If you do want to see something that costs money (and it will cost) try and get the tickets in advance and not on the day (the queues in London are rubbish)

Apart from that... Enjoy yourself.

Oh, and I will share one of my old jokes about London - it will be great when they finish building it...

You will see.

Disneyland - London...yes, I see what you mean!

You worried about the conservatives? What mischief are they up to this time?

Over here in Blighty I wish I could have more confidence in them but I just can't stand the leader and they don't look like they want to achieve anything, its awful - but then again the Liberals and the Labour Party really haven't impressed me either.

Politics is an odd game indeed, google Peter Mandleson and see if you can explain how in any other job he would have been roasted over the coals for his exceptionally dodgy performance but to make it back into the party after what he did defies logic yet in politics it somehow works!

I am looking forward to having you over in Blighty, its going to be a lot of fun indeed!

I really like London too, in moderate doses, although as some wit once said about the World, although it's a spledid place to visit, I wouldn't want to live there...

Have a good time, babe.

Comeback with your greatest post ever.
:D

And a souvenir, bring me a souvenir!

Some fancy tea, or a fancy jam, or Paddington bear's skeleton or something.

Robin - I wish you could be there too!

Lee - It is my first trip to London. I love travel and I love seeing places I've never been, so I really can't go wrong. :)

Philip - See my next post for a link to what the crazies in my government have been up to. I'm looking forward to having a pint down the pub with you!

Mark - I hope I don't want to live there, because I don't think I could afford it. :)

Mike - I will take lots of pictures and get as many things to bring back as I can afford. Thanks for the good wishes. I plan on having the time of my life.

Look ouT London. :)

Makes going through customs more interesting I guess?

I had visions of you ripping apart hundreds of Paddington Bears in tourist shops looking for a skeleton – failing - then deciding to use a ‘substitute’ and just ‘say’ it was Paddington Bear’s skeleton.

Funny really – I was never a fan of London. As Mark said – great to visit, but you wouldn’t want to live there. Too busy for me... too many bloody tourists - Oops

At least you can ask some of your blogging chums what you should see.

My vote (on rainy days) will probably be the National History museum and the British Museum – both Free of charge I believe.

Oh, and a walk down the Thames at sunset looking at the Tower of London and Tower bridge... very nice.

I’m dreaming of warm beer on the Thames now – a tear is forming in my eye, must be dirt.

Also, make sure you see more of England than just London... hire a car or something to get out and about.

Get ‘up North’ and see some culture...

My advice (if you are going to be using public transport in London) is to invest in an oyster card* a little swipable card that costs a fiver in newsagents and tube stations which you can put credit on. Reduces standard tube journey cost from £4 to £1 and bus fares from £2 to £1. Soon pays for itself.

*See http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ for info on this and getting about.
(N.B. No unlicensed cabs! – Sorry for the nag – but there you go :-)

Yep – you will also be able to get a great view of ‘the gherkin’ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gherkin which is phallic landmark handy to navigate by. Fun fact: The squat modern building nearby (built by the same architect) is the headquarters of London Council and known to locals as ‘Ken’s Testicle’ after the old mayor of London, Ken Livingstone.

Lee -

The National History Museum is at the top of my list for museums to visit. It's been recommended by everyone. I've added a walk along the Thames at sunset to my list. I hope to enjoy manY pints on my holiday. I do want to hire a car and take a few adventurous excursions, so fingers crossed that works out as well.

Hazel -

Thank you so much for the tip on the oyster card. I'll be sure to pick one up. And I'm certain I'll be thinking of you and Ken's Testicle when I take some pictures of the Gherkin. ;)

If you're going to London you definitely want to visit the London Eye. I did last Friday- a link to my photos is up on my blog. The view from the top is amazing.

I never got to go on the London Eye... I gave up.

I was in London for work (this was when I was living up North so a trip to ‘old smokie’ was a good thing) and thought "I will go on the London Eye - the new thing to see in London".

I see a queue by the ‘big wheel’ (of course, this is London, queues are everywhere) and thought, well it isn't too long and tried to join it.

I was then quickly told I was in the wrong queue and had to buy a ticket in the building over behind me... where there was a queue to get into the building.

I think, I wonder what happens once you are inside the building... that's right, you get to the real queue to buy for tickets to join the queue outside waiting for the London Eye.

I decided the London Eye was not for me.

I'm sure it got better since... I suppose you can confirm this. It was why I suggested to buy tickets in advance where you can.

Sharon I've added a walk along the Thames at sunset to my list.

Don’t expect to see the sun... it will probably be cloudy. However you do get to see some great sights – for free. Sunset is a great time since you will see it in daylight, then night will all the lights...

London is very expensive and it is good to have a cheap day once in a while.

And since I saved you some money, I will now recommend you spend some wisely (I hope).

When you go to Westminster Abbey – Do go on the official tour (at the abbey, not some hotel excursion – don’t be tricked).

The abbey tour takes you to an area the ‘normal folk’ cannot go to... up by all the ‘special’ tomes of Kings (where two of my favourite Kings of England are buried – Henry V (Liked to fight the French) and Edward (I) Longshanks (though Billy will hate him – ‘hammer of the Scots’ was inscribed on his tomb for some reason) and you get to jump a few queues as well when seeing the tomb of Elizabeth I and Mary - which is always nice.

I do want to hire a car and take a few adventurous excursions, so fingers crossed that works out as well.

If you are based in London – I think you can take the train to Hampton Court in about an hour, and Windsor Castle in probably 40 mins (I am guessing – I drove)

Saves you driving on the wrong side of the road...

All this talk of holidays... I need a holiday.
